2025 Year in review

2025 has been a busy year for the network. As we move into 2026, we take a look back at what the network and its members have achieved over the past year

We’ve mobilised hundreds of councillors to resist anti-migrant policies, both locally and nationally. Over 150 councillors signed our letter on changes to refugee family reunion, while over 100 signed our pledge in the run-up to local elections, committing to represent everyone in their communities, avoiding divisive rhetoric and speaking up against anti-migrant policies.

This year, local councillors have continued to play a huge role in the movement to resist the far right, and the Migrant Champions Network has supported them along the way. We’ve brought together councillors from the UK and Spain to strategise long-term, local responses to the transnational far right - watch the event back here. We’ve also had local authorities around the UK pass our motion committing to resisting the far right and supporting residents under threat. Read the motion here

We’ve also supported councillors to speak out in the media, at a time when speaking out in support of migrants’ rights is more important than ever. We partnered with NEON, a brilliant organisation providing support to progressive organisations and campaigners, to provide media training for a group of local councillors. We also developed a bespoke messaging guide for councillors to help them navigate questions about housing and migration, and tackle the myths that the far right use to divide our communities.

Excitingly, we’re also taking the fight against the far right to the local level, establishing anti-misinformation networks in local authorities across the UK. These local networks will tackle far-right misinformation on the ground, helping stop the spread of divisive rumours and create more resilient communities. Read our guide to setting up an anti-misinformation network in your local area, and get in touch if you’d like to discuss in more detail.

On top of this work - which also included producing guides to resisting immigration raids and Home Office infiltration of community events - we took the time to come together to share solidarity and energy, in recognition of how tough this work can be for those on the front lines. A group of MCN members met in March 2025 to break bread together - and break the Ramadan fast - with a delicious iftar meal. Together, we took the time to strategise our response to the challenges we face, and share expertise and strength for the fight ahead. We look forward to doing more of the same in 2026!
