Get involved with the network

We welcome councillors from all parts of the UK and parties (including Independents) to get involved with the network.

All councillors are welcome to attend our meetings, take our actions and attend our events. We send out regular newsletters with information about the latest migrants’ rights campaigns, and how councillors can get involved, as well as guidance, resources and updates about trainings and events. Make sure you’re signed up to our mailing list to get updates.

Local councillors who are involved with the network (even if they’re not official Migrant Champions) can get things like support with casework and help engaging with the media. We also organise frequent learning sessions and trainings, including things like immigration law and media training - so make sure you sign up for our mailing list, and get in touch if you’d like any support!

Becoming a Migrant Champion

Becoming a Migrant Champion means officially being recognised as an advocate and point of contact for migrant residents.

Becoming a Migrant Champion might work in different ways depending on how your local council works. Many of the current Migrant Champions were appointed after their council passed a motion creating the Migrant Champion role - see our template motion here.

In mayoral council systems, the process may work differently. Some councils do not use motions to create Champion roles - they are sometimes created by committees or by officers.

What is a Migrant Champion?

Migrant Champions are recognised within their local authorities as advocates for migrant constituents, and for migrants' rights issues within the local council and beyond.

Migrant Champions act as a point of contact for migrant constituents looking for support, and can do cross-ward casework. They also work to make sure their local councils are protecting the rights of all migrants, and campaign for the rights of all migrants in their local areas and beyond.
